Music and Performing Arts play a vibrant and valued role in school life, offering pupils the opportunity to express themselves, build confidence and work creatively with others. From the very earliest years, children are encouraged to explore music, movement and performance in a supportive and inclusive environment. These experiences help to develop communication skills, teamwork and a lifelong appreciation of the arts, while ensuring that every child feels proud to take part, whatever their starting point.
Music is taught regularly across the school through a well-structured and engaging curriculum. Children learn about key musical elements such as rhythm, pitch and tempo, and develop practical skills through learning instruments including the glockenspiel and recorder. Musical learning is celebrated each half term, when classes perform what they have been working on to one another, helping pupils to build confidence, reflect on their progress and appreciate the achievements of their peers.
We also offer a range of additional instrumental opportunities through external providers during the school day. These include Rock Steady band sessions, individual piano lessons delivered by Hertfordshire Music Service, and group guitar lessons. These optional opportunities are funded by parents and allow pupils to further develop their musical skills and interests with specialist teachers, supporting progression for those who wish to take their learning further.
Our KS2 choir rehearses weekly and is a highlight of the school’s musical life. Pupils enjoy learning a wide range of songs and regularly perform at school concerts, as well as visiting local care homes to share their music with the wider community. We are also proud to host our annual KS1 Singing Festival, welcoming local schools to join us in a joyful celebration of singing. Performance is a much-loved tradition across the school, including our annual Early Years nativity shows, the KS1 nativity, KS2 Christmas songs and, of course, the legendary Year 6 Leavers’ Show. These special events bring our school community together and create lasting memories for pupils, families and staff alike.
