PE & Sport Premium

PE and Sport Premium

Since the Government announced new funding for physical education (PE) in April 2013, the PE and Sport Premium, schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

We have benefited substantially from the PE and Sport Premium by using it as a catalyst to focus specifically on improving our provision. The PE and Sport Premium has given us the opportunity to allocate sports coaches to support in the delivery of our PE curriculum, invest in an extensive extra-curricular program and to buy in specialist training and physical resources. We feel that this increased focus on PE has improved what was already good provision. This was clearly evident in our most recent Ofsted report that stated,

‘The primary school sports and physical education funding is used well. The funding has been used to increase the range of sports on offer to pupils; for example, badminton and tri-golf. After-school and lunchtime clubs have increased pupils’ participation in sports, making a valuable contribution to pupils’ healthy lifestyles. The school has links with Arsenal football club and Saracens rugby football club. Both clubs offer pupils the opportunity to receive high-quality sports training.’ (Ofsted Report 2016)

Leadership and Management

The PE and Sport Premium has raised the profile of the subject in the school which, in turn, has improved the provision across the school. The PE coordinator and head teacher have worked closely with the rest of the staff, and have a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses in provision.

The Curriculum

Each class is receiving a minimum of 2 hours per week of timetabled PE. In each PE lesson, an element of competition is included through the development of skills or in whole game scenarios. There is also a focus on the children and staff of Little Reddings School leading a healthy and active lifestyle. This message is being communicated through classroom and assembly workshops, as well as future parent curriculum workshops. We have been able to reintroduce swimming for year 2 this year, this again has been a great success and the teachers are seeing a really improvement in the children’s ability in the pool.

Our investment in the complete Schools Sport Partnership competition package has enabled us to have access to support from coaches Queens School in Bushey. This has included team teaching and curriculum support across year 1. Older children are also trained to be playground leaders to support younger children at break and lunch times. They have helped increase the participation of physical activities at lunch times. Feedback from children is very positive, with many children feeling the increase in equipment and more structured activities has led to much more exciting playtimes. We have also had training for all MSA to improve the use of playground equipment and children’s involvement in games and activities.

Children’s University and Participation.

Children’s University provides a comprehensive program of lunchtime and after school clubs. Many different sports and activities are available for the children to experience and compete in. The clubs cover a wide range of activities from the customary football and rugby clubs to the more unusual street dance and judo clubs. It is the school’s aim to continue to offer new and exciting experiences for all pupils.

External links

Being part of the Bushey St James Trust has enabled us to greatly improve our links with Bushey Meads Secondary School and Hartsbourne Primary School. Following on from previous and successful involvement of Bushey Meads students at Little Reddings School, we look forward to welcoming more students over to support with sports week and our 3 sports days across the
primary school. We are also able to access the secondary school’s vast array of equipment and resources. Being able to use the resources on site at Bushey Meads will also aid the children with their transition from KS2 to KS3. We have also increased the amount of opportunities our children have to play competitive sport with and against Hartsbourne children.

As in previous years, we have had strong links with both Arsenal football club. They are often involved with different classes in the school, providing a combination of sporting and academic support.

Equipment

The sports premium has also enabled the school to invest in new and replacement PE and sports equipment. The new equipment has enhanced the teaching of lessons and the quality of lunch time and break time activities.

Playtime

Lunchtime activities offer children the opportunity to develop their health and exercise through various activities such as rotated football games. Both our team of midday supervisors and our Year 6 play leaders work together to provide structured activities for children across the key stages.

Competition

Investing in the Schools Sport Partnership competition on a yearly basis has ensured that the children of Little Reddings School have the opportunity to compete in a variety of sports with children from other schools in the local area. We have had some really successful experiences across different competitions and are delighted to be taking more opportunities to compete against other schools in our Trust.

The Future

The next steps for the school will be to:

  • Provide specialist training to staff to further develop the quality first teaching of PE and sport at Little Reddings School. (through the Schools Sport Partnership competition package)
  • Form a Team of PE champions. This will be year 5 or 6 children, who will help with many PE based activities and will be given PE based responsibilities, which will range from setting out equipment, checking stock levels and making sure that equipment is in good working order.
  • Invest in scooter and bike racks to encourage children to scoot or ride to school as part of a healthier and more active lifestyle.
  • Add a long jump pit to the school field to give the children an enhanced experience in athletics lessons and better prepare them for competition.
  • Increase the exposure of Sport week and create an event where everyone enjoys and has full participation in.
